The first thing is to gather whatever proves the debt: contracts, invoices, messages or transfers. Often you start with a written claim (a burofax (a certified letter that leaves a record)) and, if there is no reply, you go to court, for example with a procedimiento monitorio (an order-for-payment procedure designed for documented debts). We review your case, look at what evidence you have and tell you which is the most suitable route to make your claim.

Do not ignore it: a lawsuit has short deadlines to respond and, if you do not reply in time, you can lose the case without defending yourself. Keep all the paperwork you receive and do not sign anything without seeking advice. Contact a lawyer as soon as possible to prepare the response within the deadline. To accept an inheritance before a notary you do not always need a lawyer, but having one helps you understand the deadlines, the taxes and the division, and avoid mistakes that are hard to fix later.
